Tai Chi Qi Gong Movement for Wellbeing

Tai chi is a centuries-old Chinese martial art that descends from qigong, an ancient Chinese discipline that has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. (The people that you see moving gracefully with flowing motions in parks throughout China, and increasingly throughout much of the modern world, are practicing tai chi.) According to some records, tai chi dates back as far as 2,500 years! It involves a series of slow, meditative body movements that were originally designed for self-defense and to promote inner peace and calm.

Qi Gong (often spelt Chi Kung) is a powerful type of health exercise, which has been practised for centuries by millions of Chinese people. It is based on repetitions of very precise sets of movements, specifically designed to benefit health on many different levels.

Qi Gong is easy to learn and enjoyable to do. Even a few minutes of practise can have an invigorating and rejuvenating effect. Regular practice brings about a deep strengthening effect for the whole body and its various systems (nervous, digestive, respiratory, skeleton-muscular, hormonal, gynaecological, etc). Its ability to help in healing a large variety of chronic and acute injuries and illnesses has been the subject of various research programmes led by the Chinese medical authorities.

No special clothing or fitness level is required, just wear comfortable loose fitting clothes, some people like to do this barefoot, some wear shoes which are flat and have a grip on the sole.  We will be practising at a very gentle pace, enough to know you have done something but not so much that you have to lie down the rest of the day!

Shirley Jones BACPR PSI TMW

We would like to introduce Shirley to you, last year we enjoyed some Tai Chi Qi gong sessions here at Grue, in the sunshine on the lawns or sometimes in the spacious hall.  Shirley is a lovely teacher who incorporates humour into her lessons and makes everyone feel relaxed.  Most of us were beginners and really enjoyed the gentle pace and the encouragment we received from Shirley.

And so we were inspired to persaude Shirley to offer a weeks retreat this coming summer.

Before moving to France in 2016 Shirley was involved within the health and fitness industry for 25 years working for both the NHS ,Hereforshire Council and private leisure services, but her passion for working with people with health conditions led her to look deeper into prescribing and delivering suitable exercises for mental , physical and wellbeing led her to follow her love of Tai Chi and Qi gong. As coordinater and Instructor for Herefords exercise referral scheme LIFT Shirley completed  her tai chi course at Devon school of tai chi in 2005. She also became a TMW ( Tai chi movements for well being ) with Rising Dragon which uses adapted movements to cater for all health conditions. A BACPR Instructor  ( British assosciation for Cardiac Disease Prevention and Rehabilitation) working for the NHS on both Cardiac Rehabilitation programme and Falls prevention as a( PSI ) postural stability Instructor Qi gong played an important part for patients recovery.

Shirley was also  a tutor and assessor for lifelong learning and set up and ran many courses delivering Pilates, Tai Chi and chair based exercise for strength and balance.
"Tai chi has been an important part of my health and fitness career and I have seen many people gain and  benefit from the practice. Its suitable and adaptable for all levels and abilities."
Shirley

The Retreat

We have all said we would like to learn Tai Chi, we have all seen the images of people in the park looking so fit and tranquil and in command of their entire beings as they slowly move and wave their arms, it all looks so easy and just what we need in our busy lives.

We offer you the opportunity to begin your journey of learning Tai Chi movements for well being, incorporating Qi gong and Chinese Yoga.  A gentle and steady start which will get you moving, introduce you to the form and give you a weeks relaxation and movement.
